Here at Chittaway Pharmacy we specialise in making compounded medication. Compounding is basically just making medications from scratch. It is somewhat a forgotten art, once upon a time every pharmacy compounded but as more and more drugs became more available many pharmacies stopped compounding and just concentrated on dispensing ready prepared medication. Compounding is real chemistry and it does take some specialty training to get it right. Not everything can be simply mixed together, you must look at each ingredient individually and consider such things as its polarity, ability to cross the skin, pH, salt form, whether they are fatty or not and how they affect the absorption of the actual drug to name a few. We have two full time lab technicians and two pharmacists who are highly trained and compound 5 days per week. Our lab, where all our compounding takes place is a professional, fully equipped safe and hygienic work area. Recently we purchased a state-of-the-art cream mixing machine that guarantees a uniformly mixed, beautiful cream that can deliver the exact dose wanted. The lab is also fitted with all the equipment required to make capsules, troches, suppositories, pessaries, liquids, slow release preparations and much more.
One thing we get asked about all the time is how to treat babies with colic/reflux. Having a baby with colic can be a real tough time for new parents and the bub. Luckily there is a simple and safe fix that can relieve the symptoms so everyone can relax. You can talk to your doctor about compounded treatments that reduce the amount of acid in the baby’s tummy. These drugs make the contents of the stomach less acidic so when the contents of the tummy splash up it doesn’t burn the lower oesophagus and cause pain. Often these drugs are only available in adult strength tablets and not suitable for babies. Fortunately, we can compound these medications into a liquid that is easy to administer and taste great, so everyone is happy.
