Herbs and your hormones

Vitex agnus-castus (Chaste Tree  also called Monks’ pepper).

The Berries of the Vitex –agnus-castus contain essential oils that can be used to correct problems arising from problems associated with the pituitary gland, which secretes hormones that help to control the menstrual cycle, stimulate ovarian function and produce sperm.

For these reasons, the herb is used to treat premenstrual symptoms, including fluid retention breast tenderness, period pain and mood swings. It may also be effective as a treatment for premenstrual aggravation of acne, cold sores and migraine.

Vitex agnus-castus is able to treat many causes of menstrual cycle irregularity, and is recommended for amenorrhoea (absent cycle) and polymenorrhoea (shortened cycle), and to re-establish regular menstruation after taking the oral contraceptive pill.

By virtue of correcting these cyclical abnormalities, and hormonal imbalances underlying them, Vitex agnus-castus may offer potential to overcome some instances of female infertility, as well as sometimes being helpful in the treatment of endometriosis and follicular ovarian cysts. It is also prescribed by herbalists to increase milk production in breastfeeding women.
