Cinnamon And Diabetes

People with Type 1 and 2 Diabetes have been advised to include cinnamon in their diet, after an overseas study found that the spice could improve glucose and lipids levels.

After 40 days, people who ate 1,3 or 6g of cinnamon a day reduced their mean fasting serum glucose by 18-29%, their triglyceride levels by 23-30%, their LDL cholesterol by 7-27% and their total cholesterol level by 12-26%. There were no significant changes in people taking placebo, showing that cinnamon had a strong result in reducing the above values.

Because cinnamon could not contribute to caloric intake, those who have diabetes or those who have elevated glucose, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol or total cholesterol levels may benefit from regular inclusion of cinnamon in their diets. In addition, cinnamon may be beneficial for the remainder of the population to prevent and control elevated glucose and blood lipid levels.

Cinnamon 500mg (1/2 gram) capsules are available from Chittaway Centre Pharmacy from $35 per 100 capsules.
